(North Bergen, NJ—May 16, 2017) High Tech Video Production and Radio Broadcasting majors, under the direction of High Tech teachers Gregg Ascolese and Chris DePierro, conducted an interview with pro hockey player Rebecca Russo, who currently plays for the New York Riveters of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL), announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.
Video Production and Radio Broadcasting majors and Jersey City residents Laiba Khan, Jabari Yemonja-Olukun, Makayla Blount, and Robert Kaiser, and Secaucus resident Alana Aninipot conducted the interview.
Russo, a Boston University Terriers alumnus, 2016-17 All-Star, and third overall scorer for the Riveters, also works for MLB/NHL Network at Boston University. She has been part of three Hockey East titles and a championship at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Minnesota.
Russo inspired many young student athletes at High Tech with her advice on juggling academics and sports and one’s drive in continuing to contribute to female athletics.
The NWHL, a revolutionary league notable for its racial and ethnic diversity, has the distinction of being the first hockey league to pay its female athletes.
Ascolese and DePierro helped aid Aninipot, Blount, and Kaiser in setting up the studio lights and cameras. Khan and Yemonja-Olukun hosted the interview with Russo.
“We students were able to enhance our broadcasting skills, as well as meet a positive role model who exemplifies discipline and innovation,” says Khan, a High Tech junior.
