(Secaucus, NJ––April 22, 2021) Chyeka Conner, a senior in the Media and Visual Arts Academy, has been honored with a Gold Level Graduating Seniors Award from U.S. Figure Skating, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Principal of High Tech High School.
Chyeka first laced up her skates at age four; by age six she was figure skating in competitions. Since 2016, she has competed in various U.S. igure Skating events in the North Atlantic Region. Today, she trains about five days per week at the Ice House in Hackensack, NJ. She has achieved all of this, while balancing the academic rigors of a full course load, including Advanced Placement courses.
The organizers who bestowed the honor upon Chyeka said: “The U.S. Figure Skating Graduating Seniors Award recognizes the hard work of student athletes who have participated in figure skating throughout high school; awards are given at the Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze level based off a skater’s level of competitive achievement in high school. Selection for this award speaks to a skater’s continued commitment to succeeding in their athletic and academic endeavors.”
Chyeka, who is headed to college in Japan next fall, hopes to find ways to keep skating while at university. She also plans to continue coaching young skaters while working to earn a place in future U.S. Figure Skating performances.
U.S. Figure Skating is the governing body for figure skating in the United States, and has been for the last 100 years.
