Capitol Bound: Melissa Santana Wins First Place in Congressional Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition, supported by members of Congress, remains one of the most widely viewed student art exhibitions in the country.

This year, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver invited student artists from the 10th Congressional District to create work reflecting the experiences of those living within the district under the theme of Resistance & Resilience. We thank @replamonica for her continued support of the arts and for creating opportunities that uplift young artists in our community.

Out of 34 submissions, our very own Melissa Santana was awarded First Place for her powerful piece, A Call to Speak. The photograph is a striking double exposure featuring a group of teenagers protesting for rights, layered with an image emphasizing the importance of speaking up on sensitive matters.

In June, she will travel to Washington for the national recognition ceremony, and her artwork will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel at the United States Capitol, one of the most highly traveled passageways between the U.S. House of Representatives and the Capitol itself. Every day, Members of Congress, distinguished guests and thousands of visitors from around the world will walk through the tunnel and experience her work.

Congratulations again, Melissa!
